MLK PROJECT

The MLK Project targets 57 missing segments in 34 census tracts, ensuring access to and connectivity between all 9 Birmingham city council districts through street enhancements, sidewalks, bike lanes, two-way cycle tracks, and improved signage. The proposed Missing LinKs (MLK) Project will unify disconnected urban villages to the city center, creating Birmingham's first seamless active transportation network.

Project 2: 81st St S from Rugby Ave to Ruffner Mountain Nature Center

Proposed Improvements: Resurfacing, sidewalk spot repairs; and traffic-calmed bicycle boulevard.
 

Connections:

  • Planned: 2024 Local resurfacing project on Rugby Ave that will add bike lanes

  • Existing: Trails in Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve

Project 1: Springville Rd from Huffman Rd to Paving Project

Proposed Improvements: Adding bike lanes and spot repairs to existing sidewalk.
 

Connections:

  • Existing: Traffic calmed section of Huffman Rd south of Springville Rd.

  • Planned: New locally funded Sidewalk on Huffman Rd north of Springville Rd

  • Planned: 2024 Federally funded paving project (STP-BH Funds) on Springville Rd that will include new bike lanes

  • Segment will allow direct connection to a BJCTA Bus Route and Huffman High School
